What a freight broker bond (bmc-84) is
Federal law requires property brokers and freight forwarders to keep $75,000 in financial security to hold operating authority from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Most use a BMC-84 surety bond. It pays motor carriers and shippers if the broker doesn't meet its obligations.
In Wyoming
Property brokers registered with FMCSA must keep $75,000 in financial security under 49 U.S.C. 13906. A surety bond is filed on Form BMC-84; a trust fund is filed on Form BMC-85.
- The $75,000 applies regardless of the number of branch offices or sales agents.
- Since January 16, 2026, FMCSA suspends a broker's authority if security falls below $75,000 and is not replenished within 7 business days of notice.
You need this bond if you're
- A new freight broker applying for operating authority
- A freight forwarder
- A broker replacing a trust fund or another surety
