About this bond

What a freight broker bond (bmc-84) is

Federal law requires property brokers and freight forwarders to keep $75,000 in financial security to hold operating authority from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Most use a BMC-84 surety bond. It pays motor carriers and shippers if the broker doesn't meet its obligations.

In Delaware

Property brokers registered with FMCSA must keep $75,000 in financial security under 49 U.S.C. 13906. A surety bond is filed on Form BMC-84; a trust fund is filed on Form BMC-85.

  • The $75,000 applies regardless of the number of branch offices or sales agents.
  • Since January 16, 2026, FMCSA suspends a broker's authority if security falls below $75,000 and is not replenished within 7 business days of notice.

You need this bond if you're

  • A new freight broker applying for operating authority
  • A freight forwarder
  • A broker replacing a trust fund or another surety

FAQs

Common questions.

How much does the Delaware Freight Broker Bond (BMC-84) cost?

From $2,250 a year: 3% of the $75,000 bond amount. That's the rate for good credit; a soft credit check sets your final price, and you see it before you pay. You can also pay for a longer term up front: 1 year $2,250, 2 years $4,500, 3 years $6,750.

Do I have to pay the $75,000?

No. You pay the premium. The bond amount is the most the surety would pay out on a valid claim, and if it ever pays one, you pay the surety back.

Is there a credit check?

A soft one. Propeller's application asks you to agree to a soft credit inquiry, which doesn't affect your credit score. Your credit can change the rate, and you see the final price before you pay.

Is the freight broker bond different in Delaware?

No. It's a federal requirement, so it's the same $75,000 in every state.

What is a BMC-84?

The FMCSA form for a surety bond. The other option, a BMC-85, is a trust fund agreement.
